LoveBirds: Things To Do Around Baltimore – July Edition

June is quickly winding down, and with July right around the corner, here are some ideas of things to do around Baltimore next month!

  • My absolute favorite thing to do in July, and something I (Rochelle) look forward to every year, is Artscape! (July 20th-22nd.) As America’s largest free arts festival, this amazing event is not one to be missed: free admission, exhibits, concerts, and hundreds of local and national vendors selling everything from art to jewelry to clothing. Oh, and there’s funnel cake too!
  • Every year the amazing event that is Otakon (July 27-29th) takes over Baltimore’s Inner Harbor for 3 days. This is one of the nation’s biggest largest anime/cosplay conventions, including “anime, manga, and all facets of Asian pop culture!”
  • Looking for an awesome outdoor concert? Be sure to check out the Ladew Topiary Gardens Summer Concert Series (Sundays in July except for the 29th.) Expect an “eclectic mix of music including Cajun, swing/blues, steel drums.”
  • Looking to see a play? Located in a beautiful outdoor theatre in a historical building ruins, Chesapeake Shakespeare Company Presents Romeo & Juliet, Pride & Prejudice at Patapsco Female Institute (Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in July.)
  • There’s nothing like watching a movie under the stars. Grab your camping chair and head on down to Little Italy for Movie Night in Little Italy (Friday nights in July & August.) Free to attend, and free popcorn is provided as well!
  • Celebrate the 4th of July with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, at their annual event, The BSO’s Star Spangled Spectacular in Oregon Ridge (July 3rd & 4th.) This outdoor concert is choreographed to fireworks and is a spectacle not to be missed!
  • Take a moment this week to disconnect from technology. It’s seemingly impossible to do these days, with the world at our fingertips (hello, iPhone), but it is great to stop and slow down once in a while. Pick an activity to do with your significant other that does not involve the TV, gaming system, phone, or internet. Purposely turn off your phone. Some ideas: Look through some old photo albums. (Remember those?) Mix up some drinks and play your favorite board game. Talk a walk around the neighborhood and see what new things you may discover.

Happy July, LoveBirds!

Elegant Hairstyles: For Thin Hair Types

Today on the blog we bring you more elegant hairstyle ideas! I am asked by many brides to be what I can do with thinner hair: Can I make it look like it has volume? Can I create a lot of curls? Can I create a full, voluminous updo? Often, we hairstylists can. Whether it is done by teasing, curling, or even extensions, creating a fuller thicker look is very possible!

Today’s model has thinner hair, but she makes her hair thicker (and a bit longer) by using clip-in extensions. To create her first style, an up-do, I twisted back half her hair and incorporated small braids into the twists to create some texture. Although her hair is relaxed, her natural hair texture helped create a bit of fullness and volume on the crown of her head. I then took the bottom of her hair and pinned it into a smooth chignon (bun.)

For the second style, I took down her chignon and curled the bottom half of her hair for a softer, elegant ‘do. By curling her hair in opposite directions with every piece of hair, it created a more textured curly look. I also pinned the top layers of curls up to create more layers and volume.

A special thanks goes to Jasmen for modeling!

Misty Glen Farm Wedding by Jamie D Photography

Today’s incredible DIY wedding comes from the talented Jamie D Photography. Tyler and Allan were wed outdoors, under a sycamore tree, at Misty Glen Farm in Fallston, MD.

From Jamie: “Tyler had a vision for her wedding day and it was displayed in all the details, which were beautiful and captured who they are as a couple. Friends and family help set up and placed each detail in its spot. Their creative guest book was hand drawn by Tyler’s mother. It was a perfect way to remember their guests, because it was under a similar tree that they became husband and wife. Their wedding cake was bake by Allan’s sister, Sarah. The center pieces with parts of their vows, verses, and phrases engraved into wood was so fitting as Allan works for his father’s tree trimming business. One last detail was the beautiful black bow on Tyler’s wedding dress that she created herself.”

Planning 101: Beat the Summer Heat

After last week’s heat wave, we were inspired to post some fun ideas to help tackle the heat for summer weddings. Summer in the Baltimore area can be brutally humid, so it’s great to be prepared. We’ve listed a few ideas on how to keep yourself and your guests comfortable…

Fans are fantastic for outdoor ceremonies or locations with minimal airflow. Ceremony program fans are even better – as they serve a dual-purpose.

Bug spray is a great idea for outdoor, woodsy weddings.

Refreshments such as lemonade, tea, or water will keep your guests happy and well-hydrated. There’s nothing worse than thirsty guests during a scorching hot outdoor ceremony. Even a nice bucket with small bottles of water will do.

Other Ideas:

  • Misting Machines or Sprinklers are great for outdoor, laid-back receptions. Many locations won’t allow this, but if you’re having a wedding at a private residence, this idea can work. It’s also great for keeping any little ones entertained.
  • Be sure to check the Historical Averages for your date! WeatherSpark is a great site to check for averages. Your date may end up differing from previous years, but it’s still good to get a general idea.

We hope this helps keep you and your guests cool! A special thanks goes to Borrowed Blue Photography for the lovely images.
