Vendor Spotlight: Borrowed Blue Photography

Tell us about yourself and your company.

I started Borrowed Blue Photography in 2000, and a year later Jamie Suthard joined the team. I have a degree in Photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and try to find ways to apply an artistic bent to all of our sessions. We limit the number of weddings a year to be able to provide our clients with the best possible customer service, and to not stretch ourselves too thin. Having recently opened a studio, we are proud to offer baby and children’s portraiture, as well as headshots, in a studio setting.

How did you find yourself in the wedding industry?

By chance. I was asked to shoot a wedding because I was a photography student, owned a camera and a flash, and was willing to work for almost nothing. I liked the results, as did the clients, and used those images in my portfolio to secure more clients, and everything just snowballed after that.

What inspires you or your work?

Fashion inspires me. Trends inspire me. Looking at other work inspires me. Learning inspires me.

What do you love about working weddings?

I love that every wedding is different. No two weddings are ever the same.

What’s your favorite part about a wedding?

I love the fast pace of a wedding. We as photographers often have a few minutes to set up a shot, or to get ready for the next part of the day. We have to be creative on the fly.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your field?

To listen. Every client, whether wedding or portrait clients, wants us to listen. They have a vision for their photographs and we need to listen to be able to fulfill that vision.

A good piece of advice for brides and/or grooms to be.

Hire professionals for your wedding day. People who do this full time, whether photographers, florists, planners or caterers, know what is expected on a wedding day, have experience with all sorts of situations, and are insured. We as photographers know where to be and when, what is a good angle, where the sun will be setting, and know how to use our equipment and have back-ups for it when something fails.

Delaplaine Visual Arts Center Wedding by Amber Reinink

Creativity abounds in this real wedding photographed by Amber Reinink, with almost every detail being a DIY perfection done by the couple themselves!

From the bride: With this wedding not being mine nor Rich’s first rodeo we knew we wanted to do things our way! We wanted it to be only close family and friends and our blended family was the most important factor to us. The theme was Rock-a-billy Retro with some country flair, meshed together like a family quilt. We wanted a wonderful environment and also to support local businesses and have a great party. I knew it had to be DIY so we could afford it and did most of the wedding myself. BBQ for dinner from the Black Hog in Frederick, pie instead of cake from a little local bakery called Ed’s Country Bakery, and fresh lemonade and sweet tea from my stovetop rounded out the menu. I made the table centerpiece cloths with fabric of various patterns and colors to look like a quilt: after all we were becoming a very large “blended” family! All in all it turned out just perfect, and represented us as a couple and as a family.

Ellicott City Engagement by tPoz Photography

Looking for an engagement session location with rustic charm and old-fashioned beauty? Look no further than Ellicott City, where this sweet couple had their e-session done!

From photographer, tPoz Photography: “Christa + Kevin are seriously troopers for freezing their booties off for their late winter Ellicott City Engagement Photos! I always love when couples choose a location with meaning, and since Christa grew up in Ellicott City, it made perfect sense to do their engagement session there! With so many nooks & crannies in this historic part of town, there are endless opportunities for great photos, including Tiber Alley. We wandered along the streets, and stopped in at the B&O Railroad Museum, where there are some lovely tracks to shoot along.”
