Linganore Winecellars Wedding by Photography by Brea

Chad and Alice wanted their day to be a fun time – and that it was! These two even combined their first two names into one hashtag for their family and friends to follow along. Thanks to Photography by Brea for sharing this laid-back winery wedding with us!

From Brea: “Meet Chalice. Chad + Alice. You know a couple is meant to be when you combine their names and it makes a WORD. Chad and Alice are two of the most FUN and yet down to earth people I’ve ever met. I had no doubt their wedding would be a blast and it absolutely was! As I was leaving I overheard a group of guests discussing how it was the best wedding ever.

#chalicewedding happened at Linganore Winecellars on August 24th. It was an absolutely beautiful day, and a stunning location to provide the backdrop as these two amazing people committed their lives to each other. Their simple but stunning details were the perfect fit as well! There was a lot of heart that went into this wedding and I just love their cute DIY centerpieces and details! Even the flowers that were provided were freshly picked wild flowers courtesy of Ellen from Local Color Flowers. They had family come from all over the world for their wedding and every single person shook it on the dance floor! So fun!”

Antrim 1844 Wedding by Rachel Smith Photography

Today’s beautiful wedding at the Antrim 1844 Country House Hotel is brought to you by Rachel Smith Photography. We loved this sweet couple and the bride wrote some lovely words for us about her wedding (which we’ve included throughout the post)… so we’ll let her take it from here!

From Katharine: “Max and I met at work, and very early into the relationship knew that we had found, “the one.” We had only been dating for a year and a half when we got engaged, so we knew we wanted to take our time in planning our perfect wedding. By giving ourselves almost two years to plan, we were able to ensure that all of our top vendors were available, and more or less, had a stress free planning process.”

“My experience as an Event Manager definitely helped in that I early on came up with a clear vision. Our theme was “rustic elegance,” and I was all about vintage lace, lush garden flowers, bluegrass music and a rustic barn. Problem was, as much as I love a good barn wedding, Max and I lean more towards the high-maintenance side rather than the rustic side. I was going to wear a great pair of heels, and wanted the girls in long dresses and the guys in tuxes. Max was insistent on AC, plumbing, and close proximity to a Starbucks. Not to mention the added stress of literally having to find a vendor for every aspect of the wedding. We quickly realized that more of a one stop shop venue was going to make life easier.”

“From the moment we arrived at Antrim 1844, we knew right away that it was the perfect place for us. It was 45 minutes away from Baltimore, so the perfect distance to make a little weekend getaway for all of the locals. Max and I have always loved staying in Bed and Breakfasts, and Antrim was stunning. We ended up filling all 40+ of their rooms with our closest friends and family and closed out each night at the very quaint “Pick Wick Pub” that is in the Mansion.

With the venue booked, my wedding vision really came into place, and since we had plenty of time to plan, no detail went unnoticed. It was very important not to have a “cookie-cutter wedding”. If there was something we liked, and wanted to incorporate, we did. All of our guests could see that this was “Katharine and Max’s wedding” and that it fit our personalities to a T!”

“Most of my attention went into all of the little details. I am a very crafty person and love an excuse to get out my hot glue gun. Much to Max’s dismay, our kitchen was deemed, “Craft Corner”, and we are still finding remnants left behind from all the crafting. My “Alpha Bridesmaid” and I we designed the ceremony program, and with the rest of my bridal parties help, we put them together. I had my mother in law constructed the burlap cones that lined the aisle during the ceremony. I didn’t want a guest book, as I knew I would never go back and read it. Instead, my mother in law cut out fabric squares for a sign-in quilt! Each of my guests signed a square, and it was later put together as a quilt. This is one of my favorite items from the wedding. I even used the scrap fabric for the table numbers.”

“Planning the wedding also introduced me to Etsy – which I used for everything from bridal accessories to sparklers! I ordered my wedding veil, bridal sash, hair brooch and bracelets from different vendors. For our parents, we had handkerchief’s hand embroidered with lovely notes, and to help with all the tears. The custom made cornhole set, in addition to the wedding location signs, our monogrammed burlap runner, escort cards, all of the items from the photo booth, all came from Etsy! I owe a lot of ideas and inspiration to the amazing vendors on the website.”

For all future brides out there planning their weddings, here are a few words of advice:

  1. Plan a wedding that YOU want to have and don’t worry about what others may think. If you stick to this, your wedding will exude love, fun, and your personalities!
  2. Be weary of a sparkler exit. While it looks great, and creates fun pictures, putting fire in the hands of your intoxicated friends and family is not the best idea. (We feared our lives for a quick minute.)
  3. Take time during the wedding day to notice all of the details. One of my favorite moments from our wedding was when I took a step back with Max and we looked at everything going on.
  4. Don’t sweat the small stuff, and enjoy every moment. The wedding day will go by all too quickly.

Wedding Traditions Uncovered: Garter Toss & The 4 Somethings

The garter toss. Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. I’m sure that most of us are familiar with these long standing wedding traditions, but where do they come from?

The garter toss actually dates as far back as the 14th century. It was thought that obtaining a piece of clothing from the bride would bring luck in love. Often times, the guests at the wedding ceremony would accompany the newlyweds back to their honeymoon suite to see that they made it safely to the bed to consummate the marriage. During this trip to the bedroom some guests would become eager to obtain a piece of clothing from the bride and they would actually rip pieces of her dress off! In order to avoid the foreseeable ransacking, the bride started throwing various items like her bouquet and her garter to her wedding guests. This was able to create satisfaction among the crowd and allowed the newlyweds to make it out of the wedding reception in one piece. Although the tradition still stands today, we use it as a form of fun instead of a way to make a quick getaway!

Most recent wedding polls have shown that the tradition of the garter toss is slowly fading away, but another wedding tradition that is still very popular is “something old, something new, something borrowed & something blue.” This tradition is also known as the “four somethings.” The four somethings dates back to the Victorian era and is thought to be the key to a happy and prosperous marriage. Here is the breakdown of this old English rhyme:

Something old signifies keeping the bride’s family history alive as she begins her future with her husband, where she would traditionally take his last name.

Something new is usually the easiest part of the rhyme to cover, because generally, the bride’s gown or jewelry are new items! Something new signifies the beginning of a new union with the bride’s chosen life partner.

Something borrowed is thought to signify a successful marriage and fertility with the new bride, and can be a variety of different items. Historically, the bride would obtain a piece of clothing from a close female friend or family member who is already happily married with children. It is an important part of the tradition that the chosen item is returned to its original owner or else it is not actually borrowed and will lose its value!

Something blue is the oldest part of this tradition. Believe it or not, white was not always the most popular color at weddings— It was actually blue! Blue is thought to be symbolic of purity and fidelity because of the Virgin Mary’s clothes in Christian art. Traditionally, the bride would incorporate blue into a hairstyle with a hairpiece or choose to have a blue garter. Some more modern ways to incorporate blue are to have your new initials monogrammed into your dress with blue thread or use blue nail polish; in some cases the bride has even gotten a blue tattoo!

The rhyme also used to include “and a six pence in your shoe.” This line of the poem is sometimes said and sometimes not; often with the line changed to “and a penny in your shoe.” This of course was to add a bit of luck, but is not typically carried out at weddings today— probably because it sounds awfully uncomfortable!

Whether you decide to make these traditions part of your nuptials or not, at least you can share the stories behind them with your friends over brunch! Happy wedding planning!

Maryland Carnival Session by Photos by Sarah Beth

When this sweet session arrived at our inbox, we simply couldn’t resist the goodness! Faith & Caleb had their anniversary photographs taken at a carnival by Photos by Sarah Beth. We love the playfulness of this summer session and it truly has us craving some delicious cotton candy!

From Sarah: “I have been dreaming of hosting couple’s carnival sessions for a while now and I knew Faith and Caleb would be perfect for the job. Faith and Caleb are newlyweds, freshly married in June. They are one of, if not the sweetest couple you would ever meet. Faith has this contagious joy; the kind of joy that shows all over her beautiful face! And what makes Faith smile the most? Her loving hubby, Caleb. They are sweet to each other, always looking to make the other happy. That was the most rewarding thing to capture on their carnival session night. It was such a wonderful pleasure to capture their real love.”
